Laura Holliday is from Lindale and started her Level 3 Professional Cookery (specialising in Pastry) course in September 2017.
I started as a student at Kendal College in September 2015. This course was the progression route I chose – Level 2 Professional Cookery > Level 3 Multi Skills > Level 3 Pastry. I love being creative and this course enables me to make my ideas a reality.
AM: Why did you choose Kendal College?
LH: I came to an Open Evening and had a look around the facilities. I met the tutors who were really friendly and enthusiastic.
AM: Is College like you had expected. If not, why?
LH: Yes, it is nothing like school.
AM: What do you most enjoy about College life?
LH: The atmosphere is brilliant, the tutors are so friendly and easy to get on with.
AM: What opportunities have you had as a student at the College?
LH: I have been a member of The Culinary Team for 2 years, which has given me the opportunity to travel abroad and experience different cultures within the hospitality sector. The money to fund these trips is raised by the team through fund raising events and outside catering work.
AM: What is the teaching style like on your course?
LH: The tutors are fun, enthusiastic and creative. I have learnt so many new skills from team work to the intricate attention to detail that pastry cooking requires.
AM: Can you describe a typical day at College?
LH: Theory and practical work. This includes food prep and service for The Restaurant @ Kendal College, which must meet the highest standards.
AM: How would you describe your College experience so far?
LH: Brilliant. I have learnt lots of new skills and feel confident about my future within the catering sector.
AM: What are you hoping to do after College?
LH: To work full time as a Pastry Chef.
AM: If you could give one piece of advice to people considering College, what would it be?
LH: Attend an Open Day and meet the tutors. Also, if possible ask to attend a ‘Taster Day’ to meet current students and find out what it is like to be at college compared to being at school then apply.
